Rethinking Success in Singapore

I came across this post on a friend’s LinkedIn page and I couldn’t agree more.

I am so blessed and grateful for the abundant opportunities that Singapore has given me. And I was one of those A students who checked the boxes, went to the right schools and landed in a profession that one might consider traditionally glam or prestigious.

But I didn’t really until 5 years ago due to major life milestone have the confidence or even realise I mattered as an individual. I was so conditioned to think of a path to success and to find the quickest way onto that path.

5 years ago I started my own barristers practice in a chambers and that’s when I truly understood what it meant to carve your own path and define success on your own terms. 2 years ago when I started my own law firm, I was addicted to the entrepreneurial spirit – the thrill of building something new and exploring avenues that remain untapped. There are certainly challenges and ups and downs of being an entrepreneur.

But apart from growing in leadership and confidence, I have grown so much personally – understanding how to balance risk and reward, and accepting when things are not perfect, pursuing instead progress over perfection.

I would have never realised that I am a builder at heart – a creative who likes to dream big (and maybe impossible!) and carve my own path, if I hadn’t taken the first step. Now that I have, I wish I did this earlier! What held me back perhaps was my desire for comfort, for tried and tested which has a lot to do with my mindset of an “A student”.

So, instead of thinking of how to do, what to do, where to do, who to do with- just jump in, jump off the cliff (of course with a parachute!) and have faith that things will somehow work out. Fortune favours not only those who work hard but also those who dare to dream.
