How Do You Balance Being a Good Lawyer and a Good Person?

In her own words, our founder Shobna Chandran reflects on what it means to balance being a good lawyer and a good person.

“There’s a common perception that lawyers are distant, cold, and unapproachable. We get so focused on the work that we risk losing sight of the human element. When you’re laser-focused on excellence and outcomes, people may never see the real you.

Here’s what I believe: we are human beings first, lawyers second.

For me, that means living by five core values every single day: justice, service, humility, integrity, and excellence. This work is more than just a job – it’s a calling. And with that comes a responsibility to show up not just as a legal mind, but a whole person. I believe that profitability and conventional success are not at odds with values – they’re strengthened by them. Lawyers who understand their “why”, who are driven by purpose, consistently outperform those who chase profit alone. Whenever commercial interests clash with my moral compass, my conscience and values serve as my North Star – they guide me toward what I know is right, even where it may not yield me profit in the short term.

I do this because I am accountable to myself and my conscience. I’ve always stood for justice, humility, and integrity – doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.”
