I woke early this morning thinking about what it means to be a good human. Leave aside intelligence, ability, power, success, ultimately we all will return to our maker.
In the time we have on this earth, the fundamental question is how have we treated others, what impact we make, the significance that we have left and the way we have touched others with kindness empathy and compassion. Part of that includes trying to understand others who are different from us, who may be less able or slower in some respect, recognising strengths instead of focusing on weaknesses. How does one integrate all of these into fast paced litigation practice? When you’re filing papers urgently, rushing to court for injunctions or preparing for trial – how does one maintain calm demeanour, patience and understanding and empathy for others?
Certainly challenging but not impossible – can one maintain calm and holiday (Bali/beach vibes) when pressed for time?
Also, how does one communicate with others so they understand the different facets of the individual – SC in work mode, SC in court mode, SC in friendly mode, SC in fun mode – not very often 😉
We are complex creatures and we don’t often demonstrate the softer sides of our personality in public or in work settings. Perhaps more of showing who we truly are and what drives us will allow better relationships to foster?
